Toprak Razgatlıoğlu fights back to the points as Jack Miller retires after early crash

Toprak Razgatlıoğlu produced a determined comeback from the back of the grid to finish 12th and score points at Misano, while Jack Miller’s race ended on the second lap after a crash. After a difficult weekend, the morning warm-up had offered encouraging signs, with both riders showing Top-10 pace.

Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP closed a challenging San Marino Grand Prix with Toprak Razgatlıoğlu scoring points after a determined comeback, while Jack Miller was forced to retire following an early crash. The weekend had proved difficult for the team, but Sunday morning brought some encouraging signs, with both riders and their crews finding a better setup direction and posting lap times in the Top 10 during the warm-up.

Starting from the back of the grid, Razgatlıoğlu produced a strong and consistent recovery throughout the race. The Turkish rider gradually worked his way through the field, showing determination and maintaining his pace until the chequered flag to cross the line in 12th position and bring home four valuable points.

Miller’s race, unfortunately, came to an early end on the second lap after a crash forced him to retire. The Australian had also shown improved pace in the morning warm-up, giving the team some positive indications after the difficulties encountered during the opening days of the weekend.

While the final results did not reflect the progress made during the weekend, the information gathered on Sunday provides the team with further data to analyse and build on as the season continues.

It’s obviously a shame for Jack that the crash ended what could have been a very positive result for the team. We had seen that the pace was there, and Toprak demonstrated it with an excellent race, consistently lapping at a pace comparable to Quartararo and the riders around the Top 10. Starting from so far back clearly doesn’t help the final result, but the most important thing is to see Toprak riding strongly again and, above all, feeling comfortable with the balance of the bike.

We are certainly still not where we want to be, and there is more work to do, but I believe the changes we made throughout this weekend are taking us in a positive direction. We will now try to apply the same approach to Jack’s bike and see if we can start the next race weekend at a higher level.

That is what we are missing at the moment: being able to show this kind of pace from the very beginning. If we can achieve that, I believe we can put ourselves in a much better position from Friday onwards.

I know this track well, but that didn’t really help because we are using a completely different bike and tyres compared with Superbike. The race was difficult because I was fighting every lap. We lose a lot on the straight, so I was mainly catching the riders under braking without really being able to overtake. Towards the end, the front tyre was also getting hotter and I started struggling more with locking.

The positive is that my pace was very strong, especially after the halfway point. I did a 1:31.7, my best lap of the weekend, and caught up with Fabio's lap time. I was already on the limit, but our pace was very similar, which is a big positive. I finished 12th, but I believe my pace was closer to seventh or eighth.

The biggest problem is still qualifying. Starting from last makes everything much harder, especially at a track where it is difficult to overtake. If I had started around ninth or tenth, I think I could have stayed in the Top 10. So in Austria we need to focus on Friday and qualifying and find a way to improve our grid position.

Overall, I’m taking the positives from today. We made a big step and I learned a lot, especially from the second half of the race. Now we go to Austria, which will be a new experience for me with this bike, and we will see what we can do there.

Not a particularly long day for me! I got away to a decent start and made a few good moves on the first lap. I felt like I had good pace and wanted to make up as many positions as possible early, because once everyone gets into single file it becomes very difficult for us to overtake around here. I was fighting with Johann and Fabio, we were all braking very late and I was just a little wider and pushing a bit harder when the front gave up.

I picked the bike up quite quickly, but I had a TC error after going through the gravel and, once I turned the bike off to try to clear it, the clutch was slipping and the bike wouldn't restart. But the damage was already done with the crash. It was obviously not the way we wanted to finish the weekend.

It was a very difficult weekend, but we never stopped trying. We changed a lot with the setup, including the headstock angle last night, and made another step from Warm Up to the race. I went a little longer with the bike and a little softer, and honestly I felt that was the best bike I had ridden all weekend. Unfortunately, I didn't get to do much with it.

Now I'm looking forward to getting to Austria and hopefully having a more normal weekend. This track was quite peculiar in the way the bike was behaving, so hopefully we can go back to the base setting we've been using over the last four or five Grands Prix, which is a bike I've become really comfortable with.
