A Challenging Friday for Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP at Misano

Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP faced a difficult opening day at the San Marino Grand Prix, with the expected potential of the Misano circuit proving harder to unlock than anticipated. After a more encouraging morning on medium tyres, the higher temperatures and switch to soft compounds in the afternoon created additional challenges for both Jack Miller and Toprak Razgatlıoğlu.

Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP experienced a challenging opening day of practice at the San Marino Grand Prix, with the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli proving considerably more difficult to interpret than expected. While the track characteristics were initially considered potentially favourable to the YZR-M1, the team was unable to find the right setup balance throughout the day, despite making several changes in an effort to improve the feeling and performance of both riders.

The morning session provided some encouraging signs, with both riders showing a more competitive pace on the medium tyre. Toprak Razgatlıoğlu finished 14th, while Jack Miller was 17th, giving the team a useful starting point from which to build for the afternoon.

However, with temperatures rising and the switch to soft tyres, the expected performance step did not materialise. Instead, both riders encountered a significant change in the behaviour of the bike, particularly in braking and corner entry, making it difficult to exploit the additional grip of the softer compound. Despite continued setup work, neither rider was able to find the feeling required to move up the order, with Miller finishing 21st and Razgatlıoğlu 22nd.

The team will now use the data collected throughout the day to better understand the difference in behaviour between the two compounds and identify the necessary changes ahead of Saturday. With the weekend still in its early stages, Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP remains focused on finding the right direction and unlocking the potential of the YZR-M1 at Misano.

Not the easiest of Fridays, I should say. About 100 metres into the track this morning, I decided to throw myself at the scenery! Cold brakes, cold tyres, and as soon as I grabbed the brake they locked up. I was on the ground before I really had time to think about it, but luckily I was okay and we were able to get back to work.

It was a busy day because we were constantly trying to adapt the bike and get it working in the way we needed. I don't think I rode the same bike twice today. We tried a lot of different things with the balance, going in different directions with the front and rear, and we made a little bit of headway towards the end of the session. It was difficult to put a proper lap together while we were still changing the bike, but we gathered plenty of information.

There is quite a lot of grip, but it is pushing the front and I'm struggling to get the bike to rotate in some of the corners. In the fast section it feels pretty stable, but when you get into the tighter corners, it feels like the bike just doesn't want to change direction. We need to work on that balance.

We are a little bit behind where we wanted to be, and the other guys are flying, so we've got some work ahead of us. But that's what Friday is for. We have some new parts coming through as well and we're still developing the bike, so we'll take what we learned today, go through the data and try to make a step forward tomorrow.

Today was a very strange day. This morning, with the medium tyre, the bike felt really good and I was feeling very positive. I did my best lap time on a used medium tyre, so I was expecting to make a big step with the soft. Instead, when we put the soft tyre on, the bike completely changed. It felt almost like I was riding a rental bike! I was really surprised.

The biggest problem was that the bike was not stopping and I was also struggling to turn it into the corners. Because of this, I couldn’t use the soft tyre in the way I wanted and I was losing the line, especially on corner entry and exit. With the medium tyre the bike feels almost perfect, but with the soft we clearly need to understand what is happening and find a different solution.

I’m feeling much better physically and we have carried over the setup that worked well for us in Aragón, so now we need to understand why the bike behaves so differently here. I honestly didn’t expect this today, but we will stay calm, work with the team and try to find a way forward for tomorrow.
