Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP faces a challenging start at Brno
The opening day of the Czech Republic Grand Prix highlighted both the strengths and the remaining limitations of the Yamaha YZR-M1. In an extremely competitive Practice session, Jack Miller and Toprak Razgatlıoğlu were unable to secure a direct place in Q2 and will have to fight their way through Q1 on Saturday.

Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP began its Czech Republic Grand Prix weekend at Brno facing a demanding challenge on a circuit whose mixed characteristics once again highlighted both the strengths of the YZR-M1 and the areas where further development is still required.

Throughout the day, the bike showed encouraging competitiveness in the more technical and stop-and-go sections of the track, where its chassis performance, agility and electronics allowed both riders to remain close to their rivals. However, the faster and more flowing sectors once again proved more difficult, making it harder to put together a complete lap in such a closely contested field.

The afternoon Practice session was one of the most competitive of the season, with the ten riders who secured direct access to Q2 covered by just six tenths of a second. Despite continuous work on setup throughout the day, neither Jack Miller nor Toprak Razgatlıoğlu was able to find the final improvements needed to move further up the order. Miller finished 18th, while Razgatlıoğlu ended the session in 21st position.

Saturday will therefore begin with both Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP riders competing in Q1, where they will aim to secure one of the two available places in Q2 before turning their attention to the Sprint race later in the day.

The lap was decent enough, but we had a few issues and I probably ended up pushing a little too hard in places. I had a couple of moments with the front during the lap, so there was probably a bit more potential there.

The positive is that the bike felt pretty good in the corners. We were able to push hard and really use the strengths of the package, even if we were having to make up some of the time we lose in other areas.

We’re working right on the limit at the moment, trying to recover what we’re missing on braking and through the middle of the corner, and today was another example of how close and competitive the field is.

Tomorrow the conditions should be a little cooler in the morning, so hopefully we can find a bit more performance, improve our position and give ourselves a better starting point for the rest of the weekend.

The biggest issue today was turning and overall grip. On the braking side I’m actually quite happy with the bike, but we are still missing something in the middle of the corner and on corner exit.

This morning was quite positive because with the used medium tyre I was able to do consistent lap times and the pace was not bad. The problem comes when we switch to the soft tyre for the time attack, because we are not able to make the same step forward as the other riders.

We have a lot of data to analyse and my crew chief is working hard to understand where we can improve. I think we need a bike that turns a little better and gives me more grip, especially when pushing for a single fast lap.

The race pace looks more competitive than the qualifying pace, which is encouraging, but tomorrow qualifying will be important. We will keep working overnight, try to improve the package and do our best to make a step forward.
