Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP confirmed the positive signs shown over the past few outings during Friday practice at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with Jack Miller delivering a strong performance to secure direct access to Q2 for Saturday’s qualifying sessions.

The Australian rider showed competitive pace throughout the day and managed to put together a strong lap in an exceptionally tight Practice session. Miller’s result further confirmed the encouraging progress being made by the team and the Yamaha YZR-M1 package following the developments introduced in recent weeks. For Toprak Razgatlıoğlu, Friday represented another important step in his ongoing adaptation to MotoGP machinery and to the demands of the Barcelona circuit aboard the Yamaha. The Turkish rider finished 19th in a remarkably close session that saw 19 riders within one second from the fastest rider. Toprak will have to go through Q1 tomorrow morning in an attempt to secure a place in Q2 and a better starting grid position.

Both riders and the team now look ahead to Saturday with confidence, encouraged by the continued improvements shown by the project and by the increasingly competitive pace demonstrated throughout the Barcelona weekend so far.

I felt good right from the start here in Barcelona. Every time I went out on track I felt more comfortable and was able to improve, so to now see myself directly into Q2 and only two tenths away from P1 almost feels unreal.

We are still missing a bit of power, but on this circuit it becomes less of an issue because you mainly use it on the main straight. Through the rest of the lap the biggest challenge is actually managing grip, because there’s not a huge amount of it available.

I think we made a significant step forward already in Le Mans, even if I wasn’t fully able to take advantage of it there because of the tyre choice in the race. But overall the Yamaha is progressing and moving closer to the front. Right now the whole process is still about trial and error — testing, tweaking and trying to maximise everything we can — but finally we are starting to see all the hard work paying off.

The team has been working incredibly hard and the engineers too have put in a huge effort, so it’s nice for everyone to finally get a little bit of fresh air and see more concrete results. Of course it’s only Friday, but starting the weekend this way gives us a lot of positivity for the next two days.

This morning was incredible — but not in a good way — because honestly I felt like I had zero grip. It felt like I was riding on ice. I even came back to the pits and asked the team, ‘What is this? Is there a problem with the bike or is the track always like this?’

But in the end I had to accept that this is simply how the track is. Everybody is riding in the same conditions and I need to adapt better to it. So I went back out and tried to improve step by step.

I followed Fabio for a while and honestly I learned a lot from watching how he approached the corners. I understood that I need to trust the front tyre more and, thanks to that, in the end I improved by almost one second.

Still, I’m quite shocked by how strange the grip feels here, but at the same time it’s another reminder that I need to stop thinking with my old Superbike habits and continue adapting myself to this completely new phase of my career with the MotoGP bike.

I’m looking forward to tomorrow because I want to put into practice even better what I learned today and hopefully make another step forward.
